Genesis
Clouds moved in and darkness encircled me;
the waters roared and wrecked my identity.
Sorrow and despair would not let me be;
anger and defeat besieged my soul weary.
On every side, I saw nothing
but waste in the abyss of resentment.
Your Spirit hovered over my shriveling life.
You spoke, light appeared—it held back the darkness aside,
You spoke to create space for my being to thrive;
Your voice stilled the waters’ outcry, so peace can arise.
You commanded, and it was so;
and You saw that it was good.
The breath of life awakened me to goodness;
the river of life roused me to Your hesed.
Great delight so settled trust in my steps;
I will dwell in Your Presence, yes, with no end.
And You looked over all You had made,
and You saw that it was very good.
*hesed = Hebrew for “loyal love”
